EXCERPT:
When his phone pinged with another text message, Dominic Burch chose to ignore it. He honestly had no desire to actually chat with the guy blowing up his phone, so he let the dude just rant and ramble. Eventually, he’d look at the string of texts and toss out a noncommittal ‘yeah’ or whatever. He honestly had no idea why he’d kept in touch with the asshole. They’d met a few years ago, when Dominic had lived in Austin the first time. What had started out as just friendly banter morphed into flirting over time. A lapse in judgement and, quite frankly, selfishness had led to a one-night stand. Unfortunately, it also led to a spectacular blow-up and prompt break-up with the love of his life.
Dominic growled and tugged the phone out of his pocket. Then he set it on the concrete floor and shoved it with his booted foot. It skidded across the garage and slid under one of the tool chests. Well, at least no one could step on it. Dominic returned to the task at hand and refocused on the BMW resting on the lift above him. A few minutes later, he heard someone pull up out front. He continued working until the person approached the bay door, boots crunching on a few bits of rock scattered on the pavement.
“Be right with you,” he called out.
“No problem.”
The wrench slipped from his hand and hit him on the head. He knew that voice. Dominic hissed and rubbed the spot before ducking to get out from under the car. He took a deep breath and turned to face the black man leaning against the garage door frame.
“Um… hi.”
Time had done nothing to diminish the allure of the vampire looking at him. No. Not looking… glaring. Shit.
Dominic wiped off his hands with the rag hanging from his belt. Normally, he had no trouble talking to people, but his tongue simply didn’t work now. Before he could find words, the man spoke.
“I’m here to pick up the cruiser brought in a few days ago for an oil change.”
Work. Right. He could do this.
Dominic went to the locked box on the wall inside his office and retrieved the keys. He returned to the vamp and handed them over, taking care to keep a bit of distance.
“Thanks.”
The vamp turned on his heel and started to walk away. Dominic swallowed his pride and followed.
“How have you been?”
Sighing, the man turned, and Dominic found himself trapped in a dark, distrusting gaze. He didn’t blame Isaac at all either. He deserved every bit of the vamp’s contempt.
