EXCERPT:

“Captain Torre!”

Gabriel Torre, or The Dragon as some called him, turned around slowly, leveling a black gaze down at his first mate, Duke. “Yes?”

Duke puffed as if he’d run the length of ten ships. “We have finished loading the Dragon.”

“Good. Get the men back on board and send this heap of driftwood to the bottom.”

“Er, Captain, there is one other thing…” Duke fiddled with his cap for a moment before continuing. “There is…a man…sleeping.”

“A man.”

Duke nodded.

“Where?”

Gabriel followed his first mate to the captain’s quarters. He was just about to berate the man for overlooking them, given that it was Duke’s job, when Duke made a quick left and opened a smaller door. Peering into the storeroom that obviously served as a bunk, Gabriel saw a man lying on the makeshift bed. Just as he stepped into the tiny space, movement below the bed caught his eye. Gabriel reached down and his fingers curled tight around a thin arm. He pulled the woman out from under the bed and glared at her.

“Who are you?”

Struggling, the woman tried to get loose as she screamed, “It wasn’t me! It wasn’t my idea!” A low groan came from the man on the bed and his eyelids fluttered as he tried to open them.

Ignoring the hysterical female, Gabriel glanced over her shoulder at the man on the bed. Nodding, he asked, “And him? What’s wrong with him?”

“Drugged. My mother did it,” she said, quick to pin the blame.

“Is that so?” Duke sneered. He reached out to touch a golden curl near her face, but an iron grip seized his wrist. Duke hissed in pain.

“I suggest you follow through on my orders,” Gabriel said in a level but firm voice. He released Duke and the man hurried away. Then Gabriel turned back to the woman. “I will ask you again: who are you? And why is this man drugged?”

Trying to cower away from him, she stammered over her words. “L-L-Lady Arisla. My mother wants me to marry him. His name is Logan Duval.”

“Duval.” Gabriel growled the name, the sound bitter. “Very well. I will leave you at Mirantheos. Until then, you will share my cabin.” With that, Gabriel bent and hoisted the man over his shoulder. “I suggest you either stay in my cabin or risk losing much more than your jewels to my crew.” He nodded toward the door.

Looking at him in fear, she apparently decided to take his word for it. Duke came back and grabbed her. She squawked but moved with him.

When they reached the railing of the ship, Duke yelled to one of the men on the deck of the other ship. “Get her, lad.”
