Slow Burn 2

Jared Haley has been lusting after Officer Austin Russell since meeting the man in the woods one day. Virgin or no, Jared has done more than enough research to know exactly what he wants: a Dom.

Austin Russell knows it’s only a matter of time before he gets his hands on Jared Haley. When he finally does, he knows he’s found the sub meant for him.

Life, though, decides to throw them both—and their friends—a curve ball or two. Now they just need to figure out how to navigate it all.

EXCERPT:

Jared sighed and pushed his almost-full glass to Jamie. “I have to get back to it.”

“If you need me, I’ll be here. Morgan’s meeting me for lunch.”

Nodding, Jared headed to the kitchen. Carl, the owner, waved him toward the pick-up window. Jared grabbed the tray and carried it back out to the dining room. He hadn’t taken the order, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t get it to the table. He started for the diners and groaned.

Harlan Frost and his brother Mitchell sat with a couple of other men, all of whom sneered when Jared neared them. Jared set out their plates.

“Can I get you gentlemen anything else?” Jared asked in his best, feigned customer service voice.

One of the men looked him up and down, and Jared suppressed a shudder. “I thought waitresses wore skirts.”

Jared bit his tongue. He needed this damned job. “I’ll leave you to it.”

He walked back toward the kitchen, not missing the cackles coming from Harlan’s table. He spotted Jamie scowling at them and prayed his friend wouldn’t let his temper get away with him. Harlan and Mitchell might’ve been Jamie’s dad and uncle, but there was absolutely no love between them.

Jared took a second to gather some semblance of calm before he turned to go back out when he heard the bells over the diner door jingle. He pushed open the kitchen door to seat the newcomers.

Part of him wanted to smile. Another part of him wanted to hide in the kitchen.

Morgan Sears, the town’s new doctor and Jamie’s lover, stood at the door, but he wasn’t alone. Sawyer’s new police chief, Austin Miller, was with him. In full uniform.

Jared alternated between chills and full-blown inferno.

Gathing his wits, he went out to greet them. Jamie joined Morgan and Austin.

“Good afternoon, gentlemen,” Jared said. He had to force himself to meet Austin’s gaze. “If you’ll follow me.”

Thankfully, Harlan and his friends didn’t make a sound when Jared walked by them. Jared dreaded what they were whispering amongst themselves, though. Most of it was probably directed at Jamie, to be honest. After Austin had arrested Jamie’s brother, Daryl, tensions within the Frost family had skyrocketed.

Jamie slid into the booth, and Morgan sat beside him. Austin took the other side.

“How has the morning gone?” Austin asked, discreetly tipping his head back toward Harlan’s booth.

“It’s been… hell, to be honest.”

“They giving you shit?” Austin asked.

“When are they not?” Jared shook his head. “I’m used to it. They’re frequent customers, and Carl doesn’t give a shit so long as they pay.”

“When are you off?” Morgan asked him.

“Two. We had a call-out, and the new server is worse than Jamie ever was,” Jared said with a wink at his best friend.

Jamie flipped him off. “Asshole.”

“Boy,” Morgan rumbled.

Jamie slumped a little, looking like a scolded child. “Sorry, Sir,” he whispered.

The whole exchange made Jared chuckle. It was a bit of brightness in his otherwise hellish day.

“You guys want your usuals?”

“Sure thing,” Austin said. “When do you go on break?”

Jared met Jamie’s gaze, praying his friend kept his mouth shut. “Uh, I…”

Before he could finish, Carl shouted for him from the kitchen. Thankful for the interruption for once, Jared gave them an apologetic smile.

“I’ll be right back with your drinks.”
