“Look, I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out.”

Dominic Monroe slipped off his glasses, closed his eyes, and pinched the bridge of his nose. “What am I supposed to say?”

Chase didn’t really know how to respond. How else could he explain it? “I’m at a loss, Chief.”

Dominic put his glasses back on and gazed at Chase for a moment before replying. “I can’t investigate a hunch.”

“I know. Just… let me do a bit of digging.”

“The mayor will have my head on a platter, Chase.”

Chase sighed. “If I didn’t feel so strongly about this, I wouldn’t give it another thought. Something isn’t right, though. There’s far more to this case than we’ve uncovered.”

The chief’s gaze shifted to a point over Chase’s shoulder. Chase didn’t need to look to know who stood in the doorway. “Come in, Detective Marshall.”

Cameron Marshall sat in the seat beside Chase, giving Chase a nod in greeting. “I’m sorry to interrupt, Chief, but we got a tip.”

“The perp?”

“No.” Cam glanced at Chase before turning his attention back to their boss. “Another body.”

Dominic cursed under his breath and looked at Chase. “Fine. You seem to think there’s more to this case, Ward? Then find me evidence. Dismissed.”

Cam and Chase left the chief’s office and headed back to their desks. Cam dropped down into his chair and waited until Chase had done the same before speaking.

“I’m guessing your idea didn’t quite go as planned.”

“It’s not an idea, Cam.” Chase pulled up the case notes on his laptop. “I know you don’t get it, but you’ve gotta trust me on this.”

“I do trust you, but… premonitions? Really? We’re cops, not psychics.”

Chase peered up at his partner, one eyebrow raised.

“Okay, not all of us are,” Cam amended.

Chase resumed typing. He couldn’t blame Cam for being skeptical. At one point, he had been, too. Then the accident happened, and… well… nothing in Chase’s life had ever been the same.
