EXCERPT:
“Drach Construction, this is Jordan. How can I help you?”
“I told you I’d find you.”
Jordan Fyre slammed the handset down onto the base, his heart thundering all the way into his throat. He stared at the phone and struggled to breathe.
“That’s the fifth time you’ve hung up on someone today.”
Jordan nearly jumped out of his skin. He spun around to see his boss, Corith Drach, standing in the doorway, arms crossed and an unreadable expression on his face.
“I-I’m sorry, Boss. I didn’t mean—”
Corith seemed to sniff the air, and his eyes narrowed. Then he gestured for Jordan to come into his office.
Jordan swallowed and forced his legs to work. He prayed to whatever gods were listening that he didn’t get fired. He loved his job as Corith’s right-hand man. He slunk into the office and sat when Corith motioned toward the leather chair in front of the man’s overflowing desk.
Corith sat and leaned back in his own chair. “What’s going on?”
Jordan knew he could trust Corith. The man was stern but fair. He cared about all his employees. Sighing, Jordan removed his glasses, set them on his lap, and scrubbed his hands over his face.
“Jordan.”
“A few weeks ago, I had a date with a guy, a vamp named Sam Cochran. I let him bite me when we, uh… well, you know. I told him I wasn’t interested in another date, and he seemed okay with that. Then I started getting texts and calls from him. I told him to leave me alone, and I blocked his number. He’s texted me from other numbers, though. He knows I work here, but I didn’t think he’d start calling. I’m sorry.”
“Hey, kiddo, look at me,” Corith said. Jordan did. “First off, thank you for telling me.” Jordan exhaled and nodded. “Second, I want this guy’s numbers and anything else you’ve got.”
“Okay,” Jordan said. He pulled up the messages he hadn’t deleted yet and handed his phone to Corith. “There were a lot more. Those he sent early this morning.”
Corith nodded and sent himself screenshots from Jordan’s cell before handing the phone back over. “I’m sending these to Raphael.”
Jordan didn’t ask why. Corith’s brother ran the city’s Arcanum office. They dealt with things in the paranormal community, things normal police didn’t touch. Considering this asshole was a vamp, it made sense. Jordan sighed and slipped his glasses back on.
“Thank you.”
Corith smiled. “Anytime. Soon enough, this jackass will figure out it’s not wise to fuck with a dragon’s friends.”
