EXCERPT:
Excruciating pain sent Raine Danierose to his knees. He panted through it, and after a few minutes, it finally stopped. Nausea lingered, and this morning, he’d seen spots of blood when he’d ducked into a convenience store restroom. He managed to stand up finally and leaned against the brick wall of the building. Sweat beaded on his skin despite the lingering chill in the air. His instincts screamed for him to shift, but he didn’t dare do it. He’d been on the run for a month now, hiding out in various places and praying no one found him.
When he felt like he could move, he stepped back out into the dark street. People dipped in and out of bars and restaurants while others milled about on street corners. He shoved his hands into his pockets and merged into the crowd. If anyone caught his scent, they didn’t let on. Then again, he honestly had no idea how many out here were alphas. It didn’t matter anyway. Not like he could mask it.
He slowed his pace as he passed a small diner. He had a little money left, and he honestly couldn’t recall the last time he’d let himself just rest. Sighing, he went inside. There weren’t many people in the diner, thank the gods. A young woman walked up, menu in hand.
“Just one?”
Raine nodded and followed her to a booth. He slid into it, and she handed him the menu.
“What can I get you to drink, sweetie?”
“Water, please?”
She left, and he studied the menu. Last he checked, he had about thirty dollars. He had no idea how he’d get more, but his last decent meal had been a week ago. Thankfully, being a dragon meant he could go a few days without if he had to. He decided on chicken tenders and fries, nodding in thanks when she set his water down. Order taken, she headed off again. Raine took a sip and watched the late-night crowds outside.
He still couldn’t believe he’d gotten away. Black Hills was notorious for its brutal tactics, many of which Raine had experienced firsthand. Another twinge of pain hit, and he squeezed his eyes shut in hopes it would pass quickly. He knew he needed to get to the hospital, but overwhelming fear swept in the second he considered it. Rationally, he knew not all doctors were twisted, sadistic bastards, but the ones he’d dealt with had jaded his opinions. Whenever he allowed himself time to sleep, the nightmares crept in.
The server returned with his food, and Raine tried giving her a smile while thanking her. He wasn’t sure how successful he’d been, though. Since he’d fled Black Hills’ manor, he’d been on high alert and less than jovial.
The door of the diner opened, and three men entered. Raine shrank into the booth’s far corner, trying to make himself as small and inconspicuous as possible. All three were alphas, and their scents danced around in Raine’s head.
