EXCERPT:

Shaking his head, Nathan took a sip of his beer. As long as Brooke was happy and had fun, that’s all he cared about. He chuckled and glanced around. The eye candy was nice, at least. Of course, none of the guys caught his attention for more than a few seconds. They were all younger than he preferred. Sighing, he started to take another sip and stopped, bottle halfway to his mouth.

He met a deep red gaze from across the room. Not like he could forget it, that was for sure. Right after the attack, Nathan had been delirious, and not much had made it through the fog in his brain. All he recalled were those eyes and the way the cop had, somehow, stopped the worst of the pain and saved his life. He set his bottle on the table as the Arcanum officer approached him.

“I’m glad to see you well.”

Nathan swallowed and nodded. “I am. I, uh, got your voicemail. I was in class when you called.”

The man smiled and extended a hand. “We never quite got properly introduced. Silas Barr.”

Nathan shook his hand. “Nathan Ward, though I suppose you already knew that.”

Silas chuckled and gestured toward the other stool. When Nathan nodded, he sat down. “How are you feeling?”

“My arm aches a bit, but it’s getting better. Thanks for that night, by the way. I honestly thought I’d gone into the regular police station.”

“Many folks do,” Silas said. “Arcanum operates in similar ways, but paras govern themselves, so we do things a bit differently.”

“Are you… a para?”

“Yes, and no,” Silas said. “I’m a witch. I’m not immortal, but my magic affects many things, including aging.”

“Magic. Are you Wiccan?”

Silas shook his head. This close, Nathan realized Silas’ eyes were indeed red. “Oh, no. I’m not religious. I practice blood magic.”

Nathan blinked. “Blood?”

Silas chuckled, and this time, there was a darkness to it that made Nathan’s breath catch for the briefest moment. “Yes. Sometimes, my own. Other times…” His smile sent a chill through Nathan. “Well, let’s just say it’s usually offered willingly… but not always.”

The man was intimidating, even without the whole witch bit. Cops, in general, could be intense. He was also insanely hot. Short dark brown hair, thin moustache, short beard, lean yet muscular. Then there were those eyes. They were dark red, like pools of blood.

No doubt about it, Officer Silas Barr was a walking wet dream. An unnerving, somewhat terrifying wet dream.

Before Nathan could say anything else, the girls returned to the table. All three stared at the back of Silas’ head, mouths hanging open. Nathan wanted to sink into the floor the second his sister stepped around the table.
