EXCERPT:
The numbers had started running together about two hours ago, but Stephen Burch kept working. It was the only thing that kept him sane these days. He took another sip of ginger ale in hopes it would settle his stomach. He had no idea how long the nausea would last, but he prayed it wouldn’t go through the next four and a half months. He had always wanted kids, but he wasn’t so sure about the pregnancy part of the equation.
When his phone rang, he glanced over at it. No one called his cell except his brother, Dominic, but he didn’t recognize the number this time. Curious, he accepted the call and put it on speaker.
“Stephen Burch here.”
“I half expected you to change your number.”
He froze and stared at the phone. “Excuse me? Who is this?”
The caller sighed. “Come on, Stephy.”
Stephen bit back a snarl. He hated that fucking nickname with a passion. Furthermore, only one asshole had ever called him that. “What the hell do you want, Todd?”
“Can I not see how my little omega is doing?”
“I am not your omega,” Stephen snapped.
Todd tisked, the sound raking along Stephen’s nerves like nails down a chalkboard. “Yes, you are, Stephy. I know I left, and I’m sorry. I want to make it up to you.”
Stephen snorted and gave up on work. He saved the spreadsheet and closed Excel. “Not gonna happen,” he muttered.
“Why not?” Todd whined. He sounded more like a petulant child than the big, bad alpha he wanted people to believe he was.
Someone knocked on Stephen’s office door before stepping inside. He blinked at the uniformed officer who sat in one of the chairs in front of his desk.
“Stephy?”
“Do not contact me again,” Stephen said, refocusing on the call. “Get rid of my fucking number and stay out of my life. You had your chance.” He ended the call before Todd could reply. Then he tipped his head back and sighed.
“I’m guessing that was the alphahole,” Luc Raulet said.
“Yeah,” Stephen said. “Didn’t think he’d ever call me, though.”
“Want me to hunt him down and turn him into a pile of ash?”
That surprised a laugh out of Stephen, but he shook his head. “Thanks, but no. He technically hasn’t done anything illegal, and I’d hate for you to catch hell at work.”
Luc shrugged. “We’re mates. The guys would totally understand.”
