EXCERPT:

“Linds!”

“I’m comin’!”

Tony shook his head and tossed back the last of his coffee. “You’re gonna be late for school.”

Lindsey, his seventeen-year-old daughter, bounced down the steps, make-up and clothes tame for once. “Dad. Please,” she said, giving him what he’d come to term ‘the look.’ “I’ll be on time. Trust me.”

Tony smirked and waved her off.

Grinning, Lindsey opened the front door and stopped. “Uh, there’s some guy here.”

“Probably here to look at the pipes upstairs. Send him in. Drive safe, and I’ll see you after work.”

“‘Kay, Dad. Bye!”

The front door shut, and the wooden floor of the foyer creaked a little. Tony put his mug in the sink and turned, ready to show the guy to the upstairs bathroom, and then stopped dead in his tracks.

Dressed in black jeans, dusty workboots, and a dark blue T-shirt that should’ve been illegal it was so tight, the man in the foyer sure as hell was no plumber.

Tony scowled and stalked out of the kitchen, shoving past Neil. “What do you want?” he snapped, taking the steps two at a time. He heard his ex-best friend following but didn’t look back.

“Came to talk.”

Tony spun around. Fury tightened every inch of his skin. “Talk? You walked away from our friendship three months ago, and now you want to talk? I don’t think so! You know where the door is.” He went into his room and slammed his bedroom door in the man’s face. Hands braced on the dresser, Tony squeezed his eyes shut, forcing out memories he’d thought he was finally rid of. He didn’t hear the bedroom door open, but he heard the sound of someone sitting on his bed.

“Tony, please. Just hear me out.”

“Why?” Tony asked without turning. “What makes you think I want to hear anything you have to say?”

Why did you leave? Why are you back? Please kiss me before I go insane.

“Tony.” The bed creaked, and hands ran up Tony’s arms. Tony shivered. “I’m sorry.”
