“Come on, Matt. It’ll be fun.”

Fun. Right.

“I can’t believe you took a fucking job on Halloween.” I put another camera in the case and reached for a set of video cables. “This is supposed to be our time to fuck off and do some less serious hunting.”

“It’s also a time when there’s the most activity, and you know it.”

I watched as he zipped up a bag full of extension cords. Yeah, I knew that. But after the case in Florida three years ago, we’d sworn off Halloween jobs all together. There were some cases that just shouldn’t be taken at all, doors that should never, ever be opened.

Nightmares. Voices in the night. Unseen assailants. For us, they were things we dealt with on a daily basis. But that job in Florida? It was as if every entity for fifty miles had decided I would be their Halloween party favor. I’d been lucky to live through it, and I probably wouldn’t have if it hadn’t been for Zack.

We were a hell of a team. Both of us were kick-ass investigators, and we took the cases no one else would. But nothing had prepared us or our team for that horrible, fucked-up night. So, no. No Halloween jobs.

Unless the job paid really, really well.

“How much are they paying?”

Zack smiled. “Eight.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. I can’t believe you took that. Normally, you need a grand before you’ll even walk out of the house.”

“Eight thousand.” He picked up a pillow off the bed and threw it at me. I ducked, but it still managed to hit me in the head. “And that’s the only reason I took it for tonight. We’ve got bills to pay, and what better way to do that than a high-paying, one-night thing? It’s not too far away, the house is stocked with food, and we don’t have to spring for a hotel. We’re out hardly anything. This will be the easiest eight grand we’ve ever made, baby.”

Eight thousand dollars. For a two-man crew of paranormal investigators to check out a…

“What’s the job again?”

“You weren’t listening the first time?”

“Well… no.” I flashed him a guilty smile. “I was too busy being pissed that we had to work tonight. So tell me again? Please?”

“I think the property is involved in some kind of will dispute between kids. Three of them want it, but the two that contacted me? I think they’re willing to let it go if it’s otherwise inhabited.”

“And the other?”

“I don’t have a clue. From what I gathered, she’s not aware that we’ve been hired.”

“Sibling rivalry at it’s finest.”
