EXCERPT:
Ric stared up at the fortress looming before him. What had once been a Marcher lord’s castle was now home to the Devereux clan, one of the few packs along the Welsh-English border. Crumbling towers flanked the old gatehouse, the portcullis long gone. Just beyond the gaping hole stood the main keep. To the right, the remains of the kitchen and one storehouse sat at an angle from the keep. The stone chapel, now in ruins, was to the left. The wooden stables had long-since rotted away.
Why the hell was he here? With Madelyn gone, there wasn’t anything to come back to.
A door opened at the front of the keep, and Ric started up the bike again. Ev stood on the steps, arms crossed as he rolled up in front of her. Ric sighed, killed the engine, and slid off, stretching as he stood.
“About time.”
“Hey, I’m here, aren’t I?”
Ev rolled her eyes but smiled. All it took was Ric grinning back, and she hugged him tight. “Thank you.”
“Yeah, yeah. Not gonna leave my baby sis hanging, you know that.” Ric held her at arm’s length. “You doing okay?”
Ev nodded. “I’m managing. It isn’t easy keeping this band of hooligans in line, you know.”
Ric snorted as he followed his sister inside. “Just threaten to beat their asses. That always works.”
“See?” She flashed him a grin over her shoulder. “You’re well-suited for the job. They won’t listen to me anyway.”
“Hmm, true. You never could get that alpha bitch thing going.” He laughed and ducked before she could slap him.
“You haven’t changed,” she said. “You’re still a fucking asshole.”
“Ev, where is…” Dark gold eyes narrowed on Ric from across the room. “What the fuck is he doing here?”
Ev sighed and grabbed Ric’s arm, shaking her head as she led him into the library off to the left. “Let it go, Quinn. Ric’s home. Leave him alone.”
Soon as the door shut, Ric growled. “I thought he left, too.”
“Quinn came back a few months ago.”
“I take it he still blames me for everything?” When he didn’t get anything more than a sympathetic smile, Ric shook his head and dropped into one of the leather armchairs. “Some things never change.”
He felt like he was saying that a good bit lately, though, in reality, things had changed. All he needed to do was look around—at Ev, at the castle—to see that life continued on, moving forward while he stayed behind. Quinn. Jesus, Ric hadn’t expected Madelyn’s brother to be here. The man’s presence led Ric’s mind down paths he most certainly did not want to go.
