Darkness.
It was all Alec was aware of when he woke. He didn’t even remember how he got here to begin with–wherever here was. The floor beneath him was smooth, cold stone and had clearly been chiseled quite a long time ago, so he assumed he was still in the house. Judging by the cool, somewhat damp air, he figured this was the basement. He had no clue where or how far down he’d wound up, though.
He stood and shivered. The chill seeped through his clothing and felt like it went right through to his bones. He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and turned on the flashlight app. Then he took stock of the room. It took him a moment to realize he was in a cell. The chill crept through his body as he scanned the four stone walls. Thick, rusted metal rings hung on one wall, and he couldn’t help but wonder how many prisoners had been left here. Dirt and other debris had collected in the corners, and one pile included what looked suspiciously like tiny bones.
He had to find Dylan, but the phone had absolutely zero reception. He went to the door and prayed. Thankfully, it opened. He’d been half-convinced it would locked somehow.
Outside the cell, the dark hallway stretched from one side to the other. He shone the phone’s flashlight left and right. More doors, some open, some not, lined both walls. He figured they were more cells. He managed to tamp down the morbid curiosity and ignored each one as he started down the right.
He had no doubt Dylan was looking for him. The air was just as cold out here in the hall as it was in the cell. The smell of damp dirt surrounded him, confirming he was definitely underground.
All he knew was that he was here, and Dylan was somewhere… out there.
