EXCERPT:

Toby Harper wiped his hands on his apron, smearing fresh blue paint over the cream-colored cotton. He stepped back, eyeing the wall in front of him critically. Something was missing. He studied the image for a moment before picking up his paintbrush. He dipped the tip of the bristles into a puddle of white paint, and then made a single upward stroke, giving a distant seagull a wing lift.

“Oh, wow!”

Toby turned around and grinned. “Like it?”

The woman in the doorway had a bright smile on her face. The smile widened as she sidestepped the box where Toby kept his paints.

“It’s beautiful,” she said with a satisfied sigh. “Thank you so much.” She absently rubbed her bulging belly. “He’ll love it. I’m sure of it.”

Toby gave her a sidelong glance, eyebrow raised. “It’ll be a few years before he even recognizes animals,” he said. “Let alone an ark full of them, Sis.”

Jackie rolled her eyes and slapped his shoulder. “Watch it, or I’ll save the dirty diapers for you.”

“No, thanks,” Toby laughed. “That’s his daddy’s job. I’m just the corrupting uncle.”

“Jackie?”

“Back here, Hayden. Toby just finished the baby’s mural.”

A moment later, Hayden Roth appeared in the doorway. His blond hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail, and a pair of wire-rimmed glasses sat on his nose. He angled his head down, peering over his glasses—not at the mural but at Toby. A brief, soft smile graced his lips before his gaze shifted. He walked into the room and circled Jackie’s ever-growing waist with his arms. Toby turned away before his sister could see the pain in his eyes.
