EXCERPT:

“You look like hell.” Mac, the bartender, set Jae’s beer on the bar.

“On the contrary, I feel better than I have in a long time,” Jae said. He took a sip and handed Mac money. Then he stuffed extra into the tip jar. “Why the hell didn’t I listen to you?”

“Because you’re my brother?” Mac shrugged. “I told you that asshole was bad news before you ever stepped foot into his place.”

“Yeah, well, lesson learned.”

Jae left his brother to work and turned on his barstool. He hadn’t even been out to a bar in what felt like ages. Ben hated clubbing. Jae wondered if it was because Ben didn’t want to face any other flings he’d fucked over.

The music thumped in time to the lights, something dark and industrial. Jae watched the bodies — in various states of dress — grinding and jumping and doing God-knew-what else on the dance floor. Sometimes, he wished he was the kind of person who could just let go and do that. There was a decent mix of men and women out there, though very few caught his eye. What he wanted simply didn’t frequent a place like this.

Just as he started to turn back around, a new arrival stepped through the door. Jae stared at the petite figure dressed, head to toe, in black. Not that black was unusual in this place, but something about the guy seemed… different.

“Don’t get any ideas,” Mac said behind Jae. “More bad news, of a completely different kind.”

“Who is he?”

“Angel Kelley. Friend of the club owners and one of the city’s resident fangy types.”

“A vampire? Why would he be here?” Jae glanced back at Mac. Mac raised one eyebrow, and Jae didn’t need any explanation. “Never mind. Dumb question.”

“Laws say they can’t kill when they feed,” Mac said. “Doesn’t mean you can trust them.”
