EXCERPT:

A cloud of gray smoke drifted over the pool before quickly retreating back into the shadows. In the water’s mirky depths, a scene played out in striking detail. A young man stood on a cliff overlooking the waves crashing onto the beach far below. The moonlight illuminated him for a moment. Reikerryn Seirsa felt a pang in his chest at the sight.

“You still want him.”

Reiker turned to the speaker. The man behind him stood in the arched doorway, leaning against one side with his arms crossed over his chest. Leather armor as black as obsidian glimmered in the light from the nearby hearth.

“How can I not? Look upon this creature and see perfection.”

“It is not befitting for a king to show such… weakness,” Tor said, lowering his voice as two others passed by the open door.

“It is not weakness. I will have him again, no matter the cost.”

“How?”

The vision in the pool faded until Reiker stared into the water’s dark depths. “That is my concern.” He turned to Tor. “Your task is twofold. I want the one who made him what he is now. I want his sire.”

Tor nodded. “Where do I find him?”

“Rumor has it he is in hiding. Find him by whatever means necessary. He will pay dearly for ever daring to touch that which belongs to me.”

“What other task do you wish?”

Reiker turned to the water and waved his hand over it. A new vision shimmered in the pool. “There is another we must be wary of,” Reiker said without looking away from the water. A person resembling Kieron appeared, and Reiker scowled. “That one will be trouble.”

“How can one so young be any trouble to you?”

“Like Kieron, he is fae. If he possesses even the slightest bit of magic, he will be a problem.” The young man in the water turned around, and Reiker felt old, familiar magic radiating from him even through the vision. “Do away with him.”

“Yes, sir.”

Reiker dismissed Tor with an absent wave of his hand and returned the water to its original state. Then he growled and stalked out of the room, barely managing to rein in his rage. He would not unleash it now. This rage was for one being, and not until he had that person under his control once more would he release it.

He stepped into the darkness of his throne room and settled down into a great chair hewn from ancient wood. A small, gangly creature, not much larger than a wolf, carried a tray to Reiker’s side. Reiker took the metal goblet and waved the creature away. He watched as the creature’s uneven legs carried him back into the darkness.

Tor reappeared in the doorway at the end of the long room. Reiker raised the cup to grant his commander entrance before taking a drink. The liquid was warm and thick, with the slightest hint of a metallic flavor. He swirled his finger in it as he watched the black-clad vampire approach his throne.

“What is it?”

Tor bowed. “I have just received word the young man is guarded night and day, no matter where he goes. Rumor is that Kieron is aware of your return and ordered the extra security.”

“Fuck.”
