Description
Teris Salevin is a healer struggling to save his village from disease. When his efforts prove ineffective, however, the people start to look at him as the cause. Then the sickness begins to spread, and soon the plague itself is the least of their concerns.

“I have received reports of illness in an outlying village.”
“What sort of illness?”
“A plague in the air.” Garrett Fletcher approached the dais, voice lowering to a whisper. “Rumors are beginning to spread, my lord. The people fear the sickness will reach other villages soon.”
Lord Seberin leaned to the side, nodding as his advisor murmured something in his ear. Then he sat upright. “Captain Fletcher, take a small contingent to the village and find out the truth behind these reports.”
“And if they are true?”
“I will leave that up to you. Make no mistake, Captain. Should this prove to be a plague, it must not reach Sorden. I don’t care how you do it. Just stop it.”
Garrett somehow managed to keep his expression neutral. He bowed. “As you wish, my lord.”
The moment Garrett left the great hall, several servants practically swarmed him outside, all of them talking at once. Garrett held up a hand to quiet them.
“I have no answers,” he said. “I am going to Barrowedge to ascertain the situation. I will send word when I know more.”
Before the people had any chance to speak again, he pushed through them and headed toward the stables. The sooner he could get to Barrowedge, the better. Right now, the illness was contained, but that could change at any moment. He had no time to waste.
Barrowedge was less than a day’s ride away, but it was even closer to the capital. Garrett hadn’t heard any word of illness in Sorden, but he had little doubt that it would reach the city soon if it wasn’t contained. He led his horse from its stall and prepared for the journey.
“Do you know how long you will be gone?”
“No,” he said as he tightened the saddle. He took the pack his sister handed him and attached it to the side of the saddle. Then he turned to her. “I don’t know what sort of illness this is, Elanor. The village healer sent a missive asking for aid. He wrote that it seems to be in the air, but he doesn’t know for certain. Stay home. Do not leave unless it is absolutely necessary.”
“Do you think it will come here?” she asked with a slight shiver. She crossed her arms and rubbed her hands over them, as if cold. “What happens if you get sick?”
Garrett hugged her and kissed her forehead. “The healer is unaffected, and his home is outside of the village proper. I will take precautions, of course. Stay safe.”
She stepped back as he swung up onto the saddle. “Be careful, Garrett.”
With a nod, he set off, eager to get there and find out what was going on before it could grow into a problem they couldn’t handle.
