Midnight Magic – Mychael Black
Sam Burke is a candymaker and a mage. He has had ten years to get his ex, and fellow mage, Bret Fields out of his mind. When Bret sets up a candy shop right across the street from Sam’s family candy shop, Sam sees red. Bret makes it clear right away that he wants back into Sam’s life, no matter what. When Bret doesn’t take no for an answer, local police officer Micah Holmes comes to the rescue. Sparks fly between Micah and Sam, but Bret has no intention of letting Sam go this time.

EXCERPT:
“Perfection.”
Sam Burke smiled, eyes half closed and head tipped back. He caught the drop of bittersweet chocolate on his tongue and licked his lips. A second later, warm lips covered his, and Sam moaned into Bret’s mouth. Bret devoured him, delving into every tiny point, tongue toying with Sam’s before pulling back to lap up the last of the chocolate.
“I’d do anything to keep you just like this,” Bret murmured.
“Mm… anything?”
“Anything.”
“Move in with me.”
“Sam…”
Sam knew better — he’d even expected the sigh — but it still hurt. “Never mind.”
“Come on, Sam. You know I can’t.”
Sam sat up, edging Bret out of his way none-too-gently. “Yeah. The whole ‘Bret Fields is too macho to be gay’ thing. I get it.”
“Sam, wait. It’s not –”
“No!” Sam whirled around on his heel and scowled. “I’m done, Bret.”
“Sam –”
“Out.”
“What?”
Sam pointed to the door, steeling himself against the defeated look on Bret’s face. “Out. Now. It’s over.”
Bret’s expression closed. The pleasure Sam once loved in those eyes turned to the cold hardness of anger. “Fine.” Bret stalked toward the door, then stopped, one hand on the knob. “You’ll regret this.”
“Fuck you. Get out of my house. Get out of my life. I’m no one’s dirty secret.”
The door slammed shut between them, signaling the end of a tumultuous year-long relationship that should’ve never been in the first place.
“Good riddance,” Sam muttered, ignoring the way his heart and gut clenched when he turned away.
* * *
“You have got to be kidding me.”
Stores came and went downtown these days — even other candy shops — but they never lasted long. Burkeland’s Treats had been the first, almost fifty years ago, and it had never left Burke family hands. Town residents here trusted their own, and despite the occasional candy store that sprang up and then capsized, Burkeland’s still owned the candy market.
Why the hell an arrogant prick like Bret Fields would even think about coming back here, Sam had no idea. The fact, however, remained the same: the Burke family’s biggest rival was setting up shop — right across the damned street. A decade ago, Sam might not have cared, but Bret had fixed all that without batting an eye. Last night’s dream had been a stark reminder of why Sam had kicked the man out. It had to have been a warning. That’s all Sam could think as he glared out the window.
