“Am I really ready for this?”

Logan Aldridge stared up at the building with a mix of apprehension and eagerness. Then he glanced down at the paper in his hand and took a deep breath. He had made this trip — nearly two hundred miles, to be exact — and now he wondered if it was such a good idea. He got the name of the place from a patron at the club he’d frequented for the past three years. The man told Logan about his own experience in rather lurid detail, even going so far as to draw a diagram of the membership degrees on the napkin in Logan’s hand. Logan wondered just what kind of degrees such a place used. Definitely not the college kind.

As he approached the massive, double wooden doors gracing the front of the stone house, he read the words carved in flowing script on the arch above the doorway, a quote from the infamous Marquis de Sade.

Logan reached up to ring the bell of La Chambre Sûre — The Safe House. A chime rang from somewhere inside, and he backed down one step and picked up his suitcase. A few moments later, the door opened, affording Logan his first view of the notorious mansion.

A grand staircase dominated the middle of the foyer. From the landing, it branched off to the right and left, climbed another half-story, and circled around the sides until Logan couldn’t see it anymore. A young man clad only in a bowtie and a G-string waited patiently in the doorway.

“Mr. Aldridge?”

Logan nodded and didn’t bother to ask how the young man knew him. Hell, he had filled out a rather lengthy, exhaustive application just to get this far. He extended his hand. “Just Logan, please.”

“Excellent. I’m Kyle. Glad to meet you. Master Jake is waiting for you in the parlor.” Kyle’s grip was smooth yet firm, confident even. A bunch of keys on a large ring around his wrist jingled when he shook Logan’s hand. He let go and stepped aside to let Logan enter. “He’ll be pleased to see you’re early.”
