Description

Arcanum New Orleans 5

The day Logan Dupree turned eighteen, his life changed forever. One hug was all it took. One simple, innocent hug from his half-brother. What had started as idolization eventually morphed into something far different. But what he feels is forbidden.

Arcanum officer Victor Dupree knew, seven years ago, that his half-brother was his fated mate. He fought against it, though. When Logan shows back up in his life, Victor decides he’s done waiting. Come hell or high water, he’s going to claim the one man he’s wanted for a very long time.

EXCERPT:

“How are you feeling, Officer Dupree?”

Vic groaned. “Ready to get the fuck out of here,” he grumbled.

The nurse, an older, no-nonsense woman he’d liked from the moment they’d met, smirked as she got ready to check his vitals. “Well, you’re in luck, Mr. Grumpy. Doc’s letting you go home.”

“Thank God.”

Once his vitals were done, she removed the IV from his left forearm. The wound healed on its own quickly, signaling his body was finally back to normal. Whatever he’d been nailed with during the raid on the coven house a week ago had done a number on him. He was more than ready to go home.

“I’ll get your discharge papers,” she said. “Your ride just arrived.”

Brow furrowed, he looked at her, confused. “My ride?”

She smiled. “You didn’t tell me you had a brother. You look so much alike.”

Logan.

Vic swallowed down a protest and nodded. “Yeah.”

“I’ll leave you to get dressed.”

Once she was gone, Vic got up and put on the clothes he’d worn for the raid. His coworkers had all offered to pick up some things for him, but he’d turned them all down. He really didn’t want anyone in his house. Not even them. Dressed, he sat on the edge of the bed and sighed.

He’d fully intended to get a cab to the station for his car. He was still tempted to do it when the nurse returned. She handed his discharge papers over, and he left the room. He was no closer to a decision by the time he walked out the hospital doors.

A car sat a few yards away, and a man leaned against it, arms crossed. Sunglasses hid eyes Vic knew like his own. Long, dark brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and Vic had to tamp down the urge to reach out and release it.

“Thought you might need a lift.”

Vic nodded and stopped a few feet away. He didn’t trust himself to get any closer. “Thanks.”

Logan’s expression was unreadable, but he nodded and stepped aside to open the door. “Anytime.”

Vic got into the passenger seat and buckled. Logan slid into the driver’s seat and did the same. The car’s engine rumbled to life, and then they were off.

The drive to the station was filled with a tense sort of silence that made Vic’s wolf anxious and impatient. He refused to give it more than a cursory acknowledgement, though. The past seven years had been torture—utter fucking torture. He didn’t need to give his mind, or his wolf, any more reason to focus on the issue that had cropped up the day Logan turned eighteen.

“How are you feeling?” Logan asked, breaking the almost-agonizing silence.

Vic could’ve been honest and told his brother that he was miserable and ached for the one damn thing he shouldn’t crave, but he didn’t. “Sore,” he replied, staring out the passenger window. “Tired. Sick to death of hospital food.”

Logan snickered softly. “I imagine so. I, uh, thought maybe we could…” Out of the corner of his eye, Vic saw him shrug. “I don’t know… grab dinner?”

A tiny voice in Vic’s head practically screamed how much of a bad idea that was, but he also didn’t want to see Logan walk away just yet. Even if sitting across from the man was nothing more than pure masochism.
