EXCERPT:

I loved my work, but something was missing. I was lonely and, more than once, prayed for someone–anyone–to come into my life. My bakery was the talk of the town, always busy. One would think owning a successful business would draw in potential partners, but that hadn’t proven to be the case for me. I wanted a lover, a friend, someone who shared my passion for baking and life.

That was the last thought I had before I fell asleep. My dreams were filled with images of gorgeous men, but none of them felt… right. I remembered being frustrated as, one after another, the men in my dream faded. Not even my magic could keep them interested.

Hours later, I awoke to the distinct sound of wings flapping outside my window. My first thought was a really big bat, but we didn’t have bats anywhere near me. I sat up slowly as my eyes adjusted to the dark of my room, a bit terrified of what I might see outside. As I sat motionless against my headboard, my eyes scanned the expanse of the room, the shadows playing eerily on the walls, but there was nothing in the room or outside my window. I settled back down, and, as sleep began to overtake me once again, I thought I heard it again. I willed myself back to sleep, safe in the notion that it was only an owl or some other nocturnal bird.

Somewhere between wakefulness and dream, I felt him.
