December hit like a freight train: rain, snow, ice — all dumped onto the city within the first few days. Elian paid for his coffee, picked up the to-go box, and stepped out into the fading light. With the darkness came the biting cold. He pulled his coat tighter around himself and wished he could will away the frigid chill in the air. All around him, people were heading home for the weekend. He had other plans, though. Not everyone had a home… or heat… or even food.

A few couples took their time going through the park, but Elian paid them little mind. He sought one soul out here, one person who should never have been here. Elian felt the tiniest twinge of guilt, but he pushed it away. Ryan had wanted the fortune and the power, despite Elian’s misgivings. When it became too much — when Ryan’s ambition took precedence over their relationship — Elian had walked away. He couldn’t make Ryan see the truth. That was something the mortal had to discover on his own.

Elian spotted a lone figure on a wooden bench, partially hidden by a tattered coat. Elian’s heart broke all over again. Ryan had indeed learned about the dangers of greed and avarice, and the lesson had taken everything — everything — away from him, leaving him a broken, destitute man.

Threadbare gloves barely covered the hands that held the coat closed against the bite of the winter wind. Though he was only thirty-two, time had etched lines in the once youthful face, and a sprinkling of gray dusted the black hair.

Huddled on the bench, he appeared to pay no attention to the few who braved the cold on their own business. A half-eaten sandwich lay forgotten in its plastic wrapping as Ryan stared off in the distance at a grove of trees.

Elian crouched in front of him, meeting Ryan’s empty gaze. He reached out and smoothed a lock of dark hair back from green eyes that once held a spark of life. Now they just seemed… lost.

“I looked for you last night.”

“I’m not for sale,” Ryan said in a flat voice.

It took a moment for Ryan to even glance at him. At first, Elian got no more than a vacant look from Ryan. Another moment passed before the smallest flicker of recognition showed in Ryan’s expression.

“Elian?”
