EXCERPT:

“Hey, Chase, the customer at the window wants to speak with you.”

I nodded, finished what I’d been doing, and went to the pharmacy’s drive-thru window. Before I even reached it, I was smiling. I pressed the button to speak to the man in the car.

“Hey there.”

Vincent Lyons returned the smile, which only made him hotter—if that was really possible. “I thought you might still be here. I need to pick up a script, but I also wanted to see if you’re free after work.”

I laughed and nodded. “I am. What’s your birthdate?”

“September twelve,” Vince replied.

“Got it. I’ll be right back.”

I went through the bags of meds hanging behind me and found Vince’s. Then I returned to the window and scanned the barcode. “That’ll be five dollars.” I opened the little drawer and put a small clipboard in it for Vince to sign before sending it out to the car. “What did you have in mind tonight?”

Vince signed and placed the clipboard back into the drawer. “Dinner definitely. Maybe a movie?”

“Sounds good to me.” I put the bag in the drawer. “I’m off in about thirty minutes. You’re welcome to swing by the house.”

“I’ll do that,” Vince said as he retrieved his prescription. “See you soon.”

“See you,” I said with a grin.

I watched Vince pull away and sighed. We’d talked countless times over the past couple of days since our initial meeting. Well, meeting was an understatement. Vince was joining our family pack and had come by for a cookout—only for me to discover, quite inadvertently, we were true mates. Vince hadn’t picked up on my scent due to my suppressant, but Adrian, true to form, had simply let the proverbial cat out of the bag. We’d yet to do anything, though, and, even with the pill in my system, I struggled to keep my hands to myself since we hadn’t really been alone long enough to do so much as kiss.

I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe Vince’s hesitation had anything to do with the gender thing. Vince’s wolf was male, but the human’s body was not. He’d started transitioning the human side at the age of eighteen. I wasn’t sure what he liked in terms of intimacy since we hadn’t really discussed it, but I hoped tonight would be different.

Putting it out of my mind for now, I returned to the last few things I needed to get done before we closed for the evening. Half an hour later, I was the last to leave. As I made my way to the car, my phone buzzed. I tugged it out of my coat pocket and answered.

“Let me guess: Vincent just showed up and is now getting grilled by Mom.”
