EXCERPT from Obscurité:
Caleb Faulkner sat at his desk and dragged the folder over. He hadn’t been home from Austin for long before trouble landed on his lap. He flipped through the grainy surveillance photos from a traffic cam at a popular gathering point for the nighttime, bar-hopping crowds. At first glance, nothing looked out of the ordinary, but a trained eye caught little details others would miss.
His best friend and fellow detective, Don Sterling, sat in the chair across from him. Caleb put a couple of the photos in front of Don. Don studied them and sighed before sitting back and crossing his arms.
“Something’s going on,” Don said. “I’m the last person to bitch about magic, but this influx has trouble written all over it.”
“Agreed. It seems like the numbers have grown in the past few weeks, too. What did you find out last night?”
“That new nightclub seems to be a major hotspot for witches. The vibes in that place are all kinds of fucked up.”
Caleb nodded. “Not really surprised, to be honest. Anything from the staff?”
“Owner said he’s bumped up security, especially on the nights when they’ve got live music. Not that humans can do much against witches or, hell, any para. Still, it’s a start.”
“I may run over there and get a feel for things then,” Caleb said.
“Go on a live music night,” Don suggested. “The bands really bring in a lot of folks, most of whom are paras of various types—including witches.”
“Noted.” Caleb placed the photos back in the folder. “Anything else?”
“Not yet,” Don said with a laugh. “Give it a few hours, and I’m sure something will crop up to keep us busy.”
“I don’t doubt it,” Caleb replied. “All right. Keep me updated. Otherwise, let’s follow up on those calls from the police downtown.”
“Will do.” Don stood and left the office, waving to someone in the hallway before disappearing from sight.
Caleb turned to his computer and pulled up the website for the nightclub. It hadn’t been open for more than a few months, and it was already a huge draw for locals and tourists. Chaos was quite the name for a nightclub, especially one rife with patrons from the para community. He hoped it didn’t live up to its moniker.
According to the events page, tonight was one of the live music nights. It had started around five in the evening with a goth/industrial DJ, and a band was set to hit the stage at nine. Caleb figured he’d pay the place a visit and get a feel for things on his own. He turned off the monitor and sent Don a text letting him know he was heading out.
“Take care and enjoy. Tonight is Obscurité, a goth metal band. Really kick-ass music!”
Caleb chuckled. “I’ll take your word for it, man. I’m more of a bluegrass guy, you know that.”
The eyeroll emoji popped up. “Spoil sport.”
