EXCERPT:

“You hear about the latest pot of shit mortals are stirring up?”

Tyler Sharpe looked up from his laptop. “What?”

His partner, Daren Page, dropped down into the chair at the desk on the opposite side of the room. “Yeah, police — well, the regular ones — have no clue what they’re working with, so Riley expects us to get saddled with the case soon.”

“Details?” Tyler asked, one eyebrow lifting.

Daren shrugged. “Not a whole lot, just some vigilante types actively targeting vamp-owned and vamp-frequented businesses. Break-ins, vandalism, those sorts of things. Thankfully, the assholes appear to be smart enough to not physically attack any vamps.”

“For now,” Tyler said, returning his attention to the report he was finishing up. “What sorts of places are they going after?”

“Little bit of everything, but they seem to be focusing on bars, nightclubs, places where vamps love to hang out.”

Tyler stopped typing and glanced up at Daren. “What about The Veil?”

“No idea, to be honest. Isn’t that one of the places where Ryan Brooks’ partner works?”

“It is. Deacon Crane owns it.”

Daren nodded and fired up his own laptop. “Then someone probably needs to give him a heads up, unless the perps have already hit it.”

If they had, Tyler would’ve known, but he didn’t say as much. He didn’t have Crane’s number, but Ryan would have told him if Deacon had trouble. Still, the man needed to know. Before Tyler could shoot off a text to Ryan, Riley Pierce stepped into the office Tyler shared with Daren.

“I’m assuming you know about the mortals going after vamp-centric places.”

“Yeah,” Tyler said. “I’m guessing we’ve got the case now.”

“We do,” Riley said. “I want you both out there. I’ve got a list of businesses we think will be targeted, so we need to let the owners know. I believe you know one of them, actually.”

“Crane,” Tyler said. Riley nodded. Tyler shut the laptop lid. “I’ll swing by The Veil first then. Daren, you wanna hit up the next on the list?”

“Sure.” Daren closed his laptop and stood.

Riley walked over and handed them both a copy of his list of businesses. “Just the basics for now. Bolster security, make sure surveillance systems are good to go, that sort of thing. Let them know they need to alert us if anything weird pops up.”

Tyler glanced at the paper in his hand then at his phone. It was almost eleven. All the clubs and bars would be open, but other businesses would have to wait until tomorrow. He tucked his phone into his pocket and tugged his car keys out of the other.

“Keep in touch,” he told Daren. “I’m heading to The Veil to talk with Crane.”
