EXCERPT:

For all its beauty, Dalmeare was dark, but Brenna remained brave as she picked her plants, placing them gently in the straw basket hanging from her arm. Her pale blue skirt clung to the bracken, snagging it many times and creating tiny holes in the thin fabric. She cursed and freed it every time, only to snag the sleeve of her blouse on another. The deeper into the forest she went, the worse it got. She began to wonder if the trees ever planned on releasing her. As she tugged her sleeve away from a reaching branch, she stumbled upon a small stream flowing across her path.

The water rushed by, crystal clear and sparkling in the few rays of sunlight that made it through the canopy overhead. Tiny pebbles, washed smooth by the flowing water, glistened along the edge of the stream. She stepped down to the bank and sat down. The trickle of the water was soothing, and she took her boots off, sticking her feet in the cool water. Downstream, the water gathered into a large pool. Sheltered on one side by a wall of rock, the pool was clear and inviting. As Brenna stood to walk to it, she froze. She hid behind a large gathering of bracken and watched breathlessly.

Out of the bushes on the other side of the pool appeared a tall figure in a robe. The cloth was the color of the earth itself, and the hood covered the figure’s head. She stifled a gasp as she realized this must be the fae from the stories. Never did she believe them to be true!
