Hayden – Mychael Black

Southern Cross 3

Hayden Cross has it made: a great job running a nightclub, a wonderful family, and the perfect mate. Things are going well… or so he thought. A visit at work from a police officer—fellow wolf Vincent Lyons—makes it clear there is more trouble coming from a rival pack, Ironcrest.

Andy Rowland can’t believe he’s found his true mate and family. Now he’s pregnant and excited to meet their baby in a few months. But Ironcrest, the pack he escaped, isn’t done causing problems. Eventually, tensions are going to boil over, and the Cross family will have to face the pack that simply refuses to let the omegas go.

EXCERPT:

“Boss, some dude’s here to talk to you!”

I nodded to let Justin, one of my bartenders, know I’d heard. I finished up the inventory count I’d been doing and saved it before leaving the office. The club was packed, but it didn’t take long to figure out who wanted to see me. The guy was definitely not dressed like the bar’s usual clientele. Hell, he looked like a damn cop. I went over and shook the man’s hand.

“Mr. Cross?” He didn’t yell, but I didn’t need even that much to know the guy was a wolf. Something about him was… off, though. Well, maybe not off but definitely different.

“That’s me,” I replied. “What can I do for you?”

“Can we have a chat in private?”

Curious and more than a bit wary, I gestured toward my small office. “This way.”

I led the man inside and shut the door. Then I motioned to the small couch before sitting behind my desk. The guy sat down and looked around the room for a moment. I studied him but couldn’t recall ever seeing him before now. Now that we were alone, away from the crowd, it hit me what had felt different. I realized I wasn’t scenting just male pheromones from him.

“My name is Vincent Lyons. I work with your older brother, Adrian Cross.”

Dread settled in my gut, chasing away all other thoughts. The last time our family had a visit from one of Adrian’s fellow officers, it had been after Adrian had a nasty, not-so-coincidental accident.

Officer Lyons seemed to sense my unease and shook his head. “Your brother is fine. I’m not here because of him.”

“Then why are you here?”

“I’m working on a separate case that I believe you can help me with,” Lyons said. “Someone—a wolf—is targeting omegas in a series of attacks. The suspect has been seen visiting your bar.”

I sighed and sat back, not entirely relieved. “What can I do to help?”

Lyons handed me a somewhat grainy photo. “That was taken by an ATM security camera about a block from here. Have you ever seen him?”

I studied the picture. “He looks vaguely familiar. I tend to stay in the office when we’re open, though. You mind if I bring in someone who might know more?”

“Go ahead. We need all the help we can get. This bastard is wanted for at least four attacks, possibly more. Finding him has been a pain in the ass, though.”

Nodding, I stood and stepped out of the office. The bar was still busy, but the door activity had eased up a bit. I went over to the two bouncers standing on either side.

“Scott, can I see you in the office please?”

“Sure thing.”

I led him back to the office and shut the door once more. “Officer Lyons, this is one of my bouncers, Scott Matthews. Scott, this is Officer Lyons.” I handed Scott the photo. “You recognize this guy?”

Scott’s brow furrowed as he looked at the picture. “Yeah, I do. He was here night before last.”
