EXCERPT:
Creeping along the dark passage in the dead of night wasn’t a bright thing to do, and Luc knew that. After two nights of being woken up in the middle of the night by a noise she couldn’t place, she became determined to find the source. As she paused near her doorway to get the general direction of the sound, it faded. Frowning, she moved forward towards the door just down the hall from hers. It had sounded like it came from that room.
As she neared the door, it opened, and her heart suddenly raced as her pale blue eyes stared up into the veiled emerald eyes of her employer.
“Lucretia, what are you doing out here?”
Thinking fast on her feet, she blurted out, “I was sneaking down to the kitchen for a snack.”
For a moment it looked like he didn’t believe her, but then a faint smile curved his lips. “I’ll join you to see how much of that delicious roast is left from dinner.”
Blinking rapidly at him, she nodded her head before continuing in a far less stealthily manner down the hall. Nervously, she combed her fingers through her short chestnut hair, the other pulled the edges of her black robe closed. This wasn’t a part of her plan, not that she had actually had one, but anything in her thoughts definitely hadn’t included Marcus James. Casting a side glance at him as he walked silently beside her, she had to admit on a scale of one to ten, the man rated a twenty.
He’d hired her a month ago to work as his secretary, and she’d been almost desperate for the job. When she came here for the interview, her car had been packed with all her belongings. It’d become impossible to continue staying at the apartment she’d shared with three room mates. Especially since one of the room mates wouldn’t leave her alone, and his amorous attempts had begun to become cruel.
If Marcus hadn’t hired her, she would already be back in Iowa, and living with her parents. Something she really, really didn’t want to do. Thankfully though, he hired her on the spot, and the job included room and board. She had to admit to herself: Marcus carried himself with an oddly commanding air as if used to being strictly obeyed.
