EXCERPT:
Elliot Drummond yawned and stretched as he stepped off the bus. God, had it really been five years? Everything looked the same—from the near empty bus station to the huge piece of graffiti spray-painted on the brick wall of the building. A grotesque, leering wolf skull set into the center of a red Celtic cross, it marked the area as belonging to the Redwoods pack. He hated the damn thing and the stupid territorial crap it represented.
It was also his family’s insignia.
Sighing, Elliot picked up his bag and headed into the station. No doubt Rich—or ‘Red,’ as everyone else called him—had a car waiting. Elliot had hoped to get settled before dealing with his brother, but when he saw the black Humvee with the dark-tinted windows, those hopes dissolved.
Three bulky men got out, and one held the back door open. No one said a word as Elliot climbed into the back seat. He got settled and set his bag on the floor between his feet, taking great care to ignore the butt of a gun peeking above the man’s belt. The man got in and closed the door; the other two quickly followed suit. Then they were off, making the half-hour ride to Rich’s compound in utter silence.
Elliot chewed on his thumb, staring out the dark window as they pulled up to a security gate. The fence was at least ten feet tall, and a coil of barbed wire topped it, adding another two feet. Elliot could see four guard towers spaced along the front and sides and figured there were more behind the house. The gatehouse held another two men, one of whom spoke with the driver. Elliot was given a scrutinizing look, then a nod. Letting out the breath he’d been holding, he sat back as the vehicle slowly approached the mansion.
When they came to a stop, the front door opened. Elliot couldn’t help but smile when Rich came out, looking like the king of his domain. Bright green eyes reflected the easy smile, and as soon as Elliot was out of the vehicle, Rich tugged him into a tight hug.
“Five fucking years!” Rich crowed. He held Elliot at arm’s length, looking him over. “Lookin’ good, baby brother. Lookin’ good.”
Elliot laughed. “Thanks. Looking good yourself. Been working out?”
Rich threw an arm around Elliot’s shoulders and steered him into the house. “A little bit here and there. How was graduation? Sorry I missed it.”
