Shattered – Mychael Black
Arcanum Austin 2
Tristan Farrell swore he’d never let anyone–or anything–control him again. So when Fate makes it clear he is the mate to his best friend’s brother, he fights it tooth and nail.

EXCERPT:
Xavier Silius scowled at his brother. “What the fucking hell am I supposed to do for a damn week?”
Mal shrugged. “Fish? Watch the sunset? Collect pinecones? Hell, I don’t care, Xav. I just know you need the time off after the Drabek crap. You have the keys still, right?”
Xav held up the keychain that had, along with his car and house keys, the ones that went to their family’s lake cabin. Though Mal hadn’t said the man’s name, Xav also knew Mal’s best friend Tristan lived next door. Not too close, but still close enough to make Xav’s dragon itch and grumble. Fucking fated mates bullshit.
“Do it for me if not for your own damn wellbeing?”
Xav sighed. “Fine,” he growled. He stood and glared at Mal. “I’ll see you in a week.”
He left Mal’s office, dutifully ignoring the curious looks he got from the others as he headed to the office he shared with his partner Liam Walsh.
“You… don’t look happy.”
“I’ve been told to take a week off.”
Liam grimaced. “Sorry, dude. I mean, you do have the vacation time saved up, but…” Liam didn’t continue, but he didn’t need to. Only he, Mal, and Brandon Fyre knew about the fated mates fiasco.
“I’ll be in touch,” Xav said. “Text if you need me.”
“I will, but try to relax, will ya?”
Xav glanced at his friend. “No promises. You know me.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I do. Get out of here. I’ll see you in a week.”
Xav headed out, giving Brandon a wave as the man walked in carrying two coffee cups. Brandon gave him a sympathetic smile and nod before disappearing into Mal’s office. Xav always wanted a mate, but he never thought Fate would decide it for him. The whole fated mates bit ran in families, it seemed. According to Brandon, a few guys in the Arcanum New York office had experienced it, two of them brothers who’d found their mates.
Then there was the issue of Tristan Farrell himself. The man was the epitome of snarky sarcasm and arrogance… all rolled into a gorgeous, petite body built for sin. Xav hated that his brain fed him images of the human omega all spread out, slick and naked and begging for Xav’s knot. Tristan wasn’t submissive like most omegas tended to be. Oh, no. The man was a fucking Dom.
Xav had zero—absolutely zero—intention of submitting to anyone, especially Tristan.
